Manhattan has the shape of a drinking glass and the name alludes to the drink of the same name. The reason why the lamp came to be three-part; the exhibition 100 drinking glasses in Milan, the Philips halogen lamp which was then launched, and an ordered product for a restaurant called Spångbergs in Växjö.

Gunnel was born in Lammhult and raised in to the family furniture store called Svenssons.
Her interest in design led her to study art at The Atlantic Collage in Wales. After that, she moved to Italy and enrolled at Scuola Politécnica di Design in Milan where she studied industrial design. Her efforts paid off, and at the age of twenty, Gunnel was able to take on the role of managing exhibitions and product design for a company in Bad Salzuflen in Germany. With responsibility for over a hundred exhibitions throughout Germany, she planned and designed the exhibitions stands.
