Manhattan has the shape of a drinking glass and the name alludes to the drink of the same name. The reason why the lamp came to be three-part; the exhibition 100 drinking glasses in Milan, the Philips halogen lamp which was then launched, and an ordered product for a restaurant called Spångbergs in Växjö.

During her time at Politecnica in Milan it became apparent that Gunnel had a "special feeling"for curved lines in her designs. However in the nineties straight lines were more in vogue. Some time later of course we see that many of her most continually successful designs include Egg, Ghost and Clover whilst Manhattan now nearly 15 years in production and clearly one of the best sellers in the catalogue.
